Optometrists interested in same-day fitting of astigmatic presbyopes can now order Bausch + Lomb’s newest lens, the Ultra Multifocal for Astigmatism. Unlike specialty lenses that require custom manufacturing for each patient, this new multifocal toric is available as a standard offering in the fitting set. The product is being formally launched today during the American Optometric Association’s annual meeting in St. Louis.
The monthly replacement silicone hydrogel lens combines B+L’s 3-Zone Progressive multifocal design and its OpticAlign toric design, and incorporates its MoistureSeal technology to ensure sustained comfort throughout the day. Together, these features give the lens the virtues of comfort, clarity, stability and efficient fitting, according to Bausch + Lomb. The Ultra Multifocal for Astigmatism comes in “a broad range of parameters with a straightforward fitting guide that can be readily fit in the eye care professional’s office,” a B+L press release explains.
An estimated 32 million Americans with both astigmatism and presbyopia could wear contact lenses, B+L says, but historically these individuals have had few readily available soft lens options that didn’t require some sort of compromise. Those include options like monovision with toric soft lenses, single vision lenses combined with readers and custom-ordered lenses, each of which required sacrifices and inconveniences.
The Ultra Multifocal for Astigmatism is available in parameters from +4.00D to -6.00D with two add powers and three cylinders of around-the-clock astigmatism correction.
