Patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) now have an easier option for nutritional supplementation. Today, Bausch + Lomb introduced a chewable version of its PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula vitamins.
According to the company, AREDS 2 is the only vitamin formula on the market that contains the National Eye Institute’s recommended levels of six key nutrients. In addition to serving as a general nutritional supplement, the vitamins reduce the risk of progression for moderate and advanced AMD, the company says.
The move to a chewable form—which comes in a mixed berry flavor—was inspired by growing consumer demand. In the press release, Bausch + Lomb cited research that shows about 20% of adults age 50 and older (for whom AMD is a leading cause of vision loss) experience difficulty with swallowing, which limits their ability to take vitamins.
