The International Special Olympics Committee recently honored Paul Berman, O.D., with the Spirit Award for special lifetime global leadership in promoting human dignity. This is the Special Olympics highest honor. Dr. Berman founded the Special Olympics Opening Eyes Program.

 

A fungus is killing the worlds frogs. More than one-third of the worlds amphibian species are in danger of extinction due to in part to chytridiomycosis, or frog chytrid disease. But, the eye ointment chloramphenicol has been found to cure the frog fungus and keep it at bay, say zoologists in New Zealand. While the drug will save frogs in captivity, a cure for the worlds wild frogs remains undetermined.

 

A new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code87809has been approved for the Rapid Pathogen Screening Adeno Detector, a point-of-care test for acute conjunctivitis.

Researchers found that patients with diabetes demonstrate a significantly reduced Schirmers test result and reduced corneal sensitivity, according to a study in the Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications. Researchers concluded that their results support the theory that peripheral neuropathy affects lacrimal gland function in people with diabetes.
