Now, even small-pupil patients can be scanned for amblyopic risk factors with the Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener. Today, the manufacturer announced software enhancements allowing scans in pupil sizes as small as 3mm.

Initially designed for use in children, the device allows clinicians to quickly detect vision issues in patients as young as six months of age. Also suited to adults and senior citizens, the Spot Vision Screener is now better able to be used for these groups, as smaller pupils are more common among adults. This upgrade arose from customers’ demand for better capabilities to screen the senior population, given its greater prevalence of eye disease, according to manufacturer Hill-Rom Holdings.

The device screens both eyes at once from a three-foot distance. The touch-screen display allows for one-touch activation, simple management of patient data entry, and easy configuration for both vision screening and autorefraction applications, which are performed simultaneously, Hill-Rom says.
