“SECO 2014 is a rare opportunity for attendees to bring themselves up to speed on the full spectrum of eye care, from Dr. Quigley’s Glaucoma Pearls to Breaking News from Bascom Palmer, from AREDS to zoster, we will cover it all with carefully crafted courses, special sessions and the ‘Wild and Wonderful’ Flashback Party featuring Foreigner,” says Paul C. Ajamian, OD, optometric education program development committee chair.
The OD program comprises 137 courses, including special sessions and a symposium series. The AOP program offers 153 courses, including the “Beginning Your Life in the World of Ophthalmics” track, as well as 10 team-centered learning courses designed for both ODs and AOPs.
Special Sessions
SECO 2014 offers eight special sessions totaling 16 hours of CE credit. These include:
• Breaking News from Bascom Palmer, by Mark Dunbar, OD, and Richard Awdeh, MD. This session will forecast what the next 50 years holds for anterior segment eye care, including advances in cataract and refractive surgery, treating infections in the age of resistance, and mobile health technology.
• Brushing the Surface: New Developments in MGD, Dry Eye and Infection, by Tammy Than, MS, OD, Kelly Nichols, OD, PhD, MPH, and Kimberly Reed, OD, in which the trio will cover the latest in dry eye research and infectious keratitis, including mechanisms, diagnostic testing, meibomian gland dysfunction and contemporary treatments.
• Ocular Oncology from Front to Back, presented by Vasiliki Poulaki, MD, and Anthony Cavallerano, OD. The primary care optometrist is often confronted with making decisions about suspicious adnexal, anterior segment and posterior segment lesions encountered as a routine part of a comprehensive eye exam. This session will present a logical clinical approach to differential diagnosis of ocular tumors and will help sort out the important findings when making clinical decisions surrounding malignant and sometimes commonplace benign ocular neoplasms.
• Dr. Quigley’s Glaucoma Pearls. Harry Quigley, MD, a renowned glaucoma clinician and researcher, will share his expertise and practical glaucoma pearls with attendees during this special session, moderated by Dr. Ajamian. Dr. Quigley will review the latest research on angle closure glaucoma, optic disc and nerve fiber layer evaluation, field loss, and medications vs. surgery for open-angle glaucoma.
SECO 2014 also offers many other comprehensive tracks, ranging from traumatic brain injury, pediatrics, oral pharmacology, practice management, and more.

Also, the Advanced Media Learning Center, located inside the Marketplace, houses up to 100 multimedia educational posters that offer additional opportunities to earn CE credit.
Finally, SECO wouldn’t be the same without its popular social events, such as the Downtown Dine-Around. SECO’s biggest celebration, the ‘Wild and Wonderful’ Friday Flashback Party—featuring the classic rock band Foreigner—returns to the Tabernacle, but on a new night so that more people can attend. On Saturday night, SECO also hosts the AOP Party and the Student Party.
