DRY EYE THERAPY
LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved TearScience’s LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System for treating meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). By applying directed energy to the eyelid, LipiFlow removes meibomian gland obstructions—one of the root causes of dry eye.

The device is placed over the affected eye during a 12-minute, in-office treatment using thermal energy to open blocked glands through controlled application of warmth and massage, treating upper and lower lids simultaneously.

TearScience plans to sell its LipiFlow and LipiView Ocular Surface Interferometer devices as a system. The LipiView allows physicians to visualize the tear film for accurate MGD diagnosis. The system is available for purchase on a limited basis through the end of 2011.

DIGITAL OCULAR IMAGING
Pictor Portable Digital Device

Volk Optical’s new portable Pictor digital device delivers high-resolution images of the retinal and external eye structures in office, on non-ambulatory patient visits, at off-site clinics and for pediatric patient exams difficult to conduct on a fixed system. The one-pound Pictor fits easily into a small briefcase with its accessories.

Its high-quality jpeg images, easily uploaded to a computer, are compatible with most major imaging software programs and adaptable to any patient database system, the company says.

The files can be used for patient records, or shared for remote diagnosis and consultation. The device’s Retinal module provides a 45° field of view of the fundus, and its Anterior module is used for imaging surface parts of the eye.
