EMR Software
My Vision Express, by Insight Software, is a practice management and electronic medical record software suite. Version 9.0, released this year, features enhanced enterprise-class medical insurance billing capabilities.
The software utilizes SQL server database technology. Procedure code modifiers, plan alerts and patient co-pays connect through the exam/order/claim process. New lens and material allowances are also accounted for. When dispensing, the user can identify frames with their order source and track inventory. A new feature: the Facilities Management capability. Those practitioners who work in multiple health care facilities can record where exactly each service is rendered, and a default can be set as well.
Claim submission options include individual submission or in batches, and support is provided for SSL-encrypted messaging. Call 1-877-882-7456, or go to www.myvisionexpress.com.

Ophthalmic Lenses
AR Lens Coating
Teflon Elite, from Carl Zeiss Vision in conjunction with DuPont, is a new-generation AR coating for ophthalmic lenses. These lenses offer 1% visible reflectance and 99% luminous transmittance, improving clarity and contrast sensitivity. New anti-static technology enhances the topcoat’s chemical composition (super-hydrophobic and oleophobic properties), so the lenses actively repel dust and dirt. An improved, slick topcoat prevents particles from sticking and resists scratching.
Teflon Elite coating is available on all Zeiss, Sola and AO lenses. For more, call 1-858-790-7700, or go to www.vision.zeiss.com.

There’s an App for That, Too
Vision Screening
The EyeXam iPhone app is free for download on iTunes. EyeXam, by Global EyeVentures, is a self-guided method for measuring one’s own visual acuity at distance and near. It was developed by two optometrists. The app also includes color vision plates, an Amsler grid and an eye dominance test. Download the app on iTunes or go to
www.globaleyeventures.com.
Color Vision Test
The ColoriTrac, from the Elite Performance and Learning Center, is available for download on the App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch. The app is a color vision test that approximates the Nagel anomalscope, in which a fixed yellow semicircle is matched by varying the red-green ratio in an adjacent semicircle. To make the app more game-like and interesting for users, each “match” is scored. Thanks to a new policy at the App Store, doctors can send patients the ColoriTrac app as a gift—e.g., for their birthday or as a recall reminder. (The gift certificate is accessible from the Applications tab on iTunes from your desktop.) Download the app from the iTunes App Store.
