As optometrists look to offer more long-lasting solutions for their dry eye patients, some have turned to various technologies that deliver energy to the eyelids as a means of heating clogged meibomian glands. One new radio frequency (RF) device, OptiPlus from Lumenis, was recently launched as a tool for treating meibomian gland dysfunction as well as for aesthetic applications such as reducing fine lines and wrinkles. The company says OptiPlus is designed to deliver heat across different tissue layers, thereby increasing blood circulation to improve treatment results.

Lumenis explained in its press release that the FDA-cleared device works by heating the superficial layer of the skin to promote collagen formation and stimulate periorbital skin rejuvenation while simultaneously penetrating the deeper tissue to target meibomian glands. On average, the company reports, treatments take about six minutes per side with noticeable results after four sessions.

OptiPlus features treatment presets, automatic electrode detection and temperature control to promote safety and efficacy. It comes with two handpieces and can be used on a wide range of skin types, Lumenis says.

The company recommends that the device be used in conjunction with intense pulsed light therapy when treating MGD. A clinical study conducted by Lumenis found that pairing the two devices led to a significant improvement in the number of expressible meibomian glands (>150% average), meibum clarity (>70%) and symptoms (over 60%).
