Patients prone to bacteria-related eyelid conditions like blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction need to prioritize facial hygiene. The new TheraTears SteriLid Antimicrobial Eyelid Cleanser & Facial Wash from Akorn kills 99.9% of bacteria within 30 seconds, but is pH balanced to be gentle on the eyelids, according to the manufacturer. The active ingredient is 0.01% hypochlorous acid.

Though available as an OCT product, TheraTears SteriLid Antimicrobial is considered a medical device by the FDA, Akorn says. Other OTC lid cleansers are classified as cosmetic products, while medical-grade products had previously only been available by prescription, a company press release explains.

The product, supplied as a 2fl. oz. spray bottle, will be available through both retail outlets and doctors’ offices.
