Practices that are tight on space but want to offer visual field testing now have a new option to consider. The Smartfield perimeter, just announced by manufacturer Oculus, has a small footprint and a carrying handle to allow portability. It can be operated in rooms with normal lighting conditions, saving the need for a darkroom.
The manufacturer says Smartfield has been optimized specifically for examinations for functional impairment of the central visual field, but is also suited for peripheral measurements. The device performs standard automated perimetry using an ultra-high luminance LCD display, according to Oculus.
Smartfield comes with a translucent lateral eye shield that eliminates the need for an eyepatch, and presbyopes don’t require refractive correction prior to testing, two time-saving features Oculus points out.
Oculus also says that the absence of moving parts should reduce maintenance costs and extend the usable life of the device relative to other perimeters.
