For contact lens wearers who report that their lenses aren’t staying moist throughout the day, rehydrating drops are a potential remedy. Bausch + Lomb recently introduced a new product to this market, called Biotrue Hydration Boost Contact Lens Rehydrating Drops, which first received FDA clearance in December 2022 and is now available for purchase. The company says that the drops are indicated to lubricate and rewet soft contact lenses, including daily disposables and rigid gas permeables, and provides wearers with up to eight hours of moisture.
The rehydrating drops have no preservatives and contain only natural ingredients informed by the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society's DEWS II report, B+L says. These include glycerin (the active ingredient), hyaluronan (a moisturizer naturally found in the eye), an electrolyte and an antioxidant to help protect hyaluronan against free radicals. The company also notes in its press release that the pH of the solution matches that of healthy tears to optimize lubrication and comfort.
The drops come in a multi-dose bottle, which is recyclable through B+L and TerraCycle’s Biotrue Eye Care Recycling program.
